One of our favourite Furniture Pieces… The Display Cabinet. The reason we love crafting Display Cabinets is because they’re so diverse in what they offer. Of course, not each home is the same – therefore not each Display Cabinet is ever the same. And because we locally hand craft all of our timber furniture here in Adelaide, we can easily customise one to suit your preferred requirements.
With over 50 years of experience, we’ve seen all kinds of different requests. Not only has this kept our job interesting, but it’s also allowed us to diversify our ideas of how furniture functions… Meaning we can offer our observations as advice to future clients.
What Are Display Cabinets Used For?
All kinds of things… They’re even useful as a two-in-one piece, which is why we think they’re fantastic in every home. As the name suggests, these cabinets are specifically designed for having things on display. Often complete with Glass Doors as a window to view showpiece items.
Some other ways to ‘display’ items can be through open shelves. We love this concept (and it’s becoming more and more popular with our customers, too). The clean lines and exposed front create a spacious feeling and allow light to travel through, making it feel light and open. Through this, it also serves as more of a design feature, allowing your display pieces to take centre stage in the room. Of course, you can certainly combine both exposed and glass elements to your cabinet – the choice is entirely yours.
While beautifully displaying items, your cabinet can also be used for Storage. This is something you can never have too much of, so it’s great to incorporate storage space wherever you can! Because all of our pieces are Made to Measure, this allows Storage of very specific items… Whether they be especially tall, wide or deep. We can incorporate a range of features to accommodate all kinds of items. Simply share your requirements and we’ll happily assist.
What Room of The House do They Belong?
There’s no rule for where your Display Cabinet should go. This is entirely dependant on you and your home. What kind of layout do you have? And what will the main purpose be for this particular cabinet? What other furniture might accompany it? These are all key things to consider, as they will dictate where you best see your Display Cabinet fitting in your space.
Most commonly, our customers have their cabinets in the Living Room. Often this is a room which is used a lot of the time, and where family and friends gather, making it nice to showcase display items. However, we think a Display Cabinet is equally as deserving in a Dining Room or even Hallway (if you have the appropriate space).
What Are They Made From?
Like all of our furniture made by Nordic Design, our cabinets are crafted from High Quality Hardwood Timber. This is what makes our pieces so distinctive from everything else, as the Premium timber selections we use offer the most beautiful colour and grain variations, adding depth and warmth to a space.
Some of the timbers we offer include Tasmanian Blackwood, Tasmanian Oak, Victorian Mountain Ash, Western Australian Jarrah, Tasmanian Silver Wattle or American Oak. Alternatively, if you have existing furniture pieces you’d like to match, our specialist polishers can closely match colour tones. So in other words, the colour options are endless…
In addition to timber being visually beautiful, this also ensures a quality a long lasting product, as it will withstand many years of use while maintaining a beautiful appearance.
Wanting Something Custom?
Like all furniture, everyone will want (and need) something different. That’s why we individually hand craft every item… So it can be as custom as you like. Whether you’re wanting a Glass Display Cabinet or Open Display Cabinet, we can achieve the look you like, to your exact dimensions, meaning it will be the perfect fit for your space.
Have your Display Cabinet Made to Measure so it conveniently holds the right items and also fits perfectly where you picture it in your home. And don’t feel as though you can’t incorporate elements focused on storage. Including base doors with adjustable shelves means you have added flexibility with the use of your cabinet. Or, you can have alternating shelves with exposed or hidden divisions for different bits and pieces. There are really no limits…
If you know you want custom, but knowing where to start seems overwhelming, simply talk to us about your ‘wish list’ and we can offer multiple solutions to consider. While we are very experienced, we also have a digital photo album in store showcasing previous customer orders. Browse for ideas and inspiration when designing your own custom furniture pieces.
What’s The Design Process?
This is what we consider the fun part! Generally, this will be the main part of your brief, and the rest will follow from here. Are you wanting something that’s modern and sleek, or do you want to incorporate traditional design elements? Or, you may want to something in between… No matter what, we can assist and fulfil any design style.
Next, will be the size, so we know how big or small to make it and how to best include your display and storage elements. As each piece is individually crafted, you can be as specific as needed with your dimensions.
Consider matching furniture pieces? If your Display Cabinet will be part of an open living space, then it’s likely you’ll have a Dining Suite, Lounge Suite and possibly other furniture pieces around too. For a perfectly coherent look and feel, allow us to craft these additional furniture items in the same design and timber selection. This will create a truly seamless look in your space, making it feel harmonious and well considered.
